We celebrated Pioneer Day by flying to Wisconsin! Actually we spelt at Fairbanks because our flight was so early and there is so much construction going on! this poster at the airport made me smile!!
Emilee and boys picked us up and we decided to visit the houses we had lived in from 1980 - 1983, The first house we lived in was at 241 Bader Street - we drove by there but didn't get a picture - it was a busy street and we only lived there for 2 months. It was a little hard to find someone to rent us a house when I was seven months pregnant and we had seven other children! This house was empty and had been for sale for 2 years...I called and talked them into renting to us with the stipulation it was still for sale...we cleaned it up moved in and then it sold! One event from that house that I remember was the stairs and railing going into the basement. Heidi taught a FHE lesson one Monday and had us all put on blindfolds and hold on to the handrail going down the stairs - then she taught us about the Iron Rod!! Next we went to New Franken, the old Greiling Store, is no more - but this old bank building that was next to it is still there.
This is the building that is next to the gray one between the bank and where the store used to be.
Across the street is the restaurant that Polly and I had frong legs in! We were very suspect as new comers in the place ... and we laughed that they had a Christmas tree in the corner, with shamrocks on it since it was March when we went there!
This is the current version of the New Franken house ... remember it was the end of the road? No longer - there is a road and houses on both sides of it! Part of the road goes down into the farmers fields and across the railroad tracks that you kids used to put penny's on and have them run over by the train wheels.
The barn is gone, and the house has been remodeled - badly needed! We have happy memories of our time in WI. Katie, Emilee - holding baby Lindsey, and Heather on the old front porch.
This is 2246 Boardwalk - Crockston's house we rented when they moved to AZ. The trees have grown up! This is where I was using the campstove to cook dinner and it started the kitchen on fire, Emilee broke her leg, Dad and I shoveled the whole double driveway just to turn around and have it all filled in with snow behind us! Also Dad was branch mission leader and we had 3 sets of elders and one of sisters come for Christmas dinner...we had three ten speed bicycles for Polly, Heidi and Jennie in boxes - oone of the Elder's eyes lit up and he said he had worked in a bicycle shop in CA would we mind if he put them together!! Tender mercy!!
What the house looked like when we lived there.
This is 2323 S. Webster Avenue - this house is no longer there either...kinda sad. There is a big Lutheran Church that takes about three lots.
Notice the Dentist office across the parking lot to the left? It is still open and a sister at church told me that every time she goes to the dentist she thinks of our family! One winter we had deer in the back yard - and we found out that you could not shovel your driveway snow into the street - they could fill your driveway with the plow, however!
Here's the dentist office and the store next to it - You kids would go over to the store and buy candy - one time Stan came home and said he found a dollar in the fence by the store. It was $10.00 - we went back to the store and they said it keep it!
Store not open either - gas station next to it is. The old Elementary school across the street is not there - lots of changes.
Pretty sunset from the Fox River Trail - we walked down to the pelican nesting place.
At the River - locks of love on the rails - lots of love for the Pikes! so happy to visit.
Next morning we visited the Brown County Museum - Tal and Baden hanging with the dinosaurs!
Lambeau Field in legos!! pretty cool. For $100.00 you can purchase a small lego figure, dress it how you want and put it in the stadium seats - no thanks!
It was fun to find this notice about the mirror in the old Greiling store of New Franken... says the store opened in 1900 and closed in 1991.
It made us happy that a small part of the store was perserved for memory!
It was fun to see the old Allouez mineral springs crate of water bottles - we lived in the Allowez area of Green Bay at Webster Avenue.
Old UWGB banner - there were pictures of the university in the 'old days' - like when we were there! The campus has changed a lot - much bigger trees, newer buildings, etc.
